The small Les Planards plateau on Savoleyres where the Namaste and La Marmotte restaurants are located. This pictoresque plateau will unfortunately become the location of a new ski-lift station linking Les Esserts and the top of Savoleyres for the '11/'12 season.

February 13th & 14th – Visit to Meribel

We went to go spend a fantastic weekend in Meribel which was very different to what we are used to in Verbier! There are an endless amount of slopes which span across 3 domains – Courchevel, Meribel, and Val Thorens. The type of skiing we did was a new experience to me as the domain is so huge, you tend and do ski “promenades” (kind of like doing Les 4 Vallees) rather then focussed skiing as you would in Verbier. The pistes are very well groomed, there are hardly any bumps or moguls except if you venture off-piste, and there are few crowds. However, the pistes are not very challenging, not varied and there are limited off-piste possibilities. So we are now back in Verbier!

Saturday February 6th 2010 – Beautiful Weather (am) & Snowing (pm)

9:33 – My Chalet, Verbier – 1,627 meters:

The forecast announced overcast skies and light snow today, and to my surprise, when I opened my shutters, the sun was out and the skies were completely clear! It snowed roughly 20 cm in town yesterday and everything is covered in snow. I am running out of my chalet as we speak to take advantage of the snow without too many people on the pistes as today is the start of the February vacations so a lot of people are expected to show!

14:25 – Carrefour Restaurant – 1,750 meters:
The sun has left us and the clouds have reached Verbier bringing snow and la Journee Blanche. The snow is amazing but visibility is not very good with some areas better than others.

17:02 – My Chalet, Verbier – 1,627 meters:

Back at the chalet now after a great day of skiing and a fantastic lunch at Le Carrefour Restaurant. It has stopped snowing now, and the visibility is back to normal but the clouds are still quite low and it looks like we are going to get a bit more snow later on – although it will most likely just be a sprinkling.

Sunday January 31st 2010 – Fresh Powder, Clear Skies & Very Cold!

After 10 cm of fresh snowfall last night, the conditions were excellent today. There was fresh snow, lots of sun, and not too many people on the pistes. However, it was freezing! When we set out this morning (8:30 am) it was -26 C up top and the strong winds didn’t really help either. Nevertheless, Verbier once again has huge amounts of snow so we are all set for the next couple of days and 1-2 weeks.

Quick update…The snow mentioned earlier has arrived and it has been snowing for quite some time now. I don’t think it will snow a lot tonight – only 1-2cm of snow has settled.

17:39 – My Chalet – Verbier 1,627 meters:

Verbier is under cloud cover with some risk of snowfall tonight. I can see that it is snowing over in Bruson and over the Grand St. Bernard. But I do not think the snowfall will be very heavy if it does get over here. Tomorrow morning is still set to be beautiful but it will be cloudy in the afternoon and it could snow a bit so make sure you hit the snow in the morning.

14:09 – Update from Le Fer a Cheval, Verbier 1,520 meters:

It has stopped snowing in Verbier and the sun has come out. I am looking up at the Ruinettes / Atlas domain and the sunshine is out with plenty of untracked powder. The ski conditions must be amazing!

10:27 am – My Chalet – Verbier 1,627 meters:

It started to snow in Verbier early this morning and it is snowing very hard at the moment. Roughly 5 cm of snow has already fallen around my chalet, and it is expected to snow for the rest of the day. If it does continue snowing at this rate, we could very well have 15-20cm of fresh snow in the village and more up top! Tomorrow should be an amazing snow day as it is forecast to be beautiful and sunny but very cold (up to -12 in the village!). I will keep you posted throughout the day, but will not be going skiing as there is no visibility.

Sunday January 17th 2010 – Fresh Snow!

La Marlenaz, Verbier – 17:00

It stopped snowing at around 11:00 am and the sun appeared sporadically from time to time throughout the rest of the day. A new weather front moved in as well as it did get quite a bit warmer when it stopped snowing. We went to do some peau de phoque in the afternoon, starting at Savoleyres and ending at the La Marlenaz Restaurant. We walked up off-piste and had roughly 20-30 cm of fresh snow. Although it might seem a lot, it wasn’t enough to completely cover the existing ski and snowboard tracks already there.

My Chalet, Verbier – 10:00 AM

Its snowing in Verbier and a good 10-15 cm of snow has already fallen in the village (my chalet is at an altitude of 1,691 meters) – above Les Ruinettes it has snowed 20-30 cm. The visibility at the moment is very poor with very low cloud cover. Suggested skiing/boarding would be below Les Atlas, and if possible some tree skiing as there is already a good base and the fresh snow is piling up between the trees.

Outlook for the next couple of days is fantastic. The snow fall should ease in the next couple of hours. The current forecast predicts clear skies and a lot of sun starting Monday and continuing through Friday which will give us excellent conditions!

Saturday Night January 16th 2010 – Snow, Snow, Snow

We have just come back from dinner at the Namaste Restaurant and it started snowing while we were at dinner. When we got out, there was roughly 2-3 cm of fresh snow and it was snowing quite hard. Heavy snow is expected to fall for the rest of the night – roughly 20-30cm. So great snow is on its way!!!
